How All This Works
Your browser first establishes the present location using a combination of cell tower and WiFi hotspot triangulation, and possibly the IP address, resulting in a more accurate estimate within certain areas depending on how the PC is connected to the Internet.
These coordinates are then intercepted by this web page which then forwards them to Google Maps.
Then a process called
Reverse Geocoding
is used in order to extract a conventional street address and altitude.
Finally all the results are displayed on the map, together with an estimate of the accuracy, which may well vary depending on the browser in use.
Note that if the user has not at first granted permission, location information will not be available to the web application. Also
Javascript
must be activated for the above processes to work.
